Broken vows

Come, come, whoever you are.
Wanderer, worshiper, lover of leaving—it doesn’t matter.
Ours is not a caravan of despair.
Come, even if you have broken your vows a thousand times.
Come, and come yet again, come, come.

—Rumi

dappled sunlightfaint droplets
of her taut breath,
entwined
in shadows.
she grasped quietude
in dappled sunlight
of mother earth,
and swung and turned
into a beginning…
her ending
never was,
and could it be prayer
that brought
her here,
or did the slow rise
and fall of earth
remain in belonging
of her conscious
thought.
when tentacles
spread
their darkness,
innocence could not
be forgotten
or erased
from the suffocation
of her mind,
and she turned to look
for a witness to her shame….
when all meaning
had disappeared
into the ether
of dysfunction,
no longer
her tranquil
blood
pulsed through
these disturbed
dreams.
she returned to
locations
of decay
beyond formations
of discovery,
where stars
lit the way
in dull acceptance.
her fate
written on unnatural walls
of emptiness,
shed tears
consumed by
isolation,
where upon
brotherly love
was discontinued
transfixed
by parental woes.
longing
was her only
acquisition.
she was sold into
silence,
wordless,
disfigured by
rejection.
documents
of learning
mattered more
than compassion’s
benevolent
distillation….
her broken vows
of secrecy
taunted her.
she grappled
again
with the unknowable,
her inner
voice
muffled,
she wrestled
to know
the beloved chime
of self-acceptance…
