“In a futile attempt to erase our past, we deprive the community of our healing gift. If we conceal our wounds out of fear or shame, our inner darkness can neither be illuminated, not become a light for others!”
Brennan Manning, Abba’s Child: The Cry of the Heart for Intimate Belonging

Our inmost being thrives in the safety
of true confession.
Genuine fellowship
redeems fractured hearts.
The miraculous flourishes
with honest disclosure.

Sometimes, it’s frightening
to share the dark side,
the wounded side.
We pass off our dishonesty
as nobility,
seemingly not comprehending
the unpleasantness of transgression.
Fear bites hard,
a fear of being vulnerable.

So we resort to being acquaintances,
to keep up a pretense.
The truth may disturb,
and it’s safer to hide our weaknesses.
We dare not show our flawed appearance!

Thankfully, there are
countless wounded warriors
from many walks of life.
Their stories transform
despair into hope.
Their courage resuscitates the despondent.
We honor those who admit ruin.
They are an illuminating light, resonating,
in an otherwise dark world!
