Old Photographs (part four)

mary-3Those effervescent summer evenings
brought friends around.
A home cooked meal,
drinks on the veranda,
friendly banter,
made it feel like home.

Yet she missed
the snow in winter,
and those fireside chats
with her Mum.

Her home was soon filled
with the laughter
of four children.
They consumed her time
and her energy.
Her Mum flew out
to ease the burden.

An uprising
threatened their security.
The children were not safe,
they said.
A rebellion
against injustice.
Another brutal war,
blood shed on a beautiful land!

Sadness fell upon
the beloved country!
Fear mounted.
They said goodbye to friends
to travel South
to find a new home.

Those memories held them close
always.
The mountains of the moon,
the open plains of the Serengeti.
Close friends
kept in touch
and were never forgotten.

Monday Meditation

Did I forget meditation
when madness
moved too fast?
Has frenzy trapped
my senses!

I won’t listen
to that mocking voice
inside my head.
It speaks without hesitation,
the automatic voice,
that disturbs quietness!

There is beauty in silence.
I find it in the portions
of the inner mind
where peace exists!

The harmony of my consciousness
can be reached.
It dwells in the present moment!

I can no longer
take on despair.
My being is unwilling to accept it,
the weariness
has become apparent.
I won’t hold its toxic form!

Survival is in plain sight.
The regret of yesterday
is confined,
the fear of tomorrow
is only in my imagination.

I will serve stillness
and gaze upon
its attractiveness.
I will become fully acquainted
with restfulness.

I’m running through the fields
of forgiveness.
I’m putting my hope
in contentment.
I’m imbibing the kindness
that costs nothing!

Let me stop and smell
vibrant flowers
and observe that
gigantic moon!
The birdsong is my melody
and the trees
my mentors!

I feel my ego fading
with tranquility
in attendance.

The sun can have
its glory back
as the silence speaks!

Summer

summer-6The warmth of summer is upon us,
her heart laid deep in the earth.
The birds and the bees are buzzing,
as nature joins in with the mirth.

The memory of winter is behind us
as shoots are allowed to spring forth.
There’s a joyous festivity of flowers,
when swallows return from the north.

Butterflies are dancing in celebration,
the breeze grows balmy and bright,
the evenings are alive with crickets,
and the stars enjoy clear view at night.

The dark sky gives way to morning
when the cockerel says his hello.
All around is a magical atmosphere
and the dew on the grass is aglow.

I’ve loved those halcyon summers
when the warm sea is my escape.
The blush of a suntan is showing
and iridescent skies above the landscape!

Old Photographs (part three)

marriageShe left the gloom and darkness
behind her,
to make Africa her home.
Wild animals on the open plains
were her delight
and a sun forever shining!

It was adventure
she sought,
far from where she called home,
a better life they said,
away from post war woes.

Winter became a memory
under the African sun!

He saw her from a distance
on the wards
while visiting a sick friend.
Her blue eyes sparkled
and somehow he knew
right then,
she would be his.

She seemed demure at first
with strikingly good looks,
her red hair enchanted him.
A young Engineer
on an adventure
of his own.

They married within the year
when love
was in full bloom!

when the sun
shines brighter
and its warmth
gives solace?

Have you ever felt a breeze
that makes
your senses come alive?
And in a sacred instant
the bird’s song is euphonious…
and the seasons
frolic!

Sometimes
the fragrant flowers
are intoxicating,
their colours
quite contagious
and serenity
is eternal!

Have you ever seen
contrasts
in the sunset
and the glistening moon at dawn?

Do you know those times when
the earth under your feet
feels like heaven
and your heart quickens
your breath stills
memories are lucid
dreams call out expression
and your soul awakens?

And do you believe that light
overcomes darkness
when magic is real?

The kind of magic
that makes people kinder
the sky bluer
and music more lyrical!
When heavenly beings
are Earthly!

I’ve been caught in those moments
in timeless
surrender.

Oh don’t stop me now……

She was just sixteen
when war broke out.
Like all wars
it was cruel and unrelenting.
The casualties were many,
and the devastation vast!

She saw the bombs,
the destruction.
The Hospital
became her home
when darkness fell on the World.

She never forgot the heroes
the soldiers,
who lied about their age
to fight.
It was for their country
that death took some!

Many never returned
many were lost,
the gloom,
the desolation
of war.
The suffering of the innocents,
and a blood stained world.
